Has the GOP assured Hillary the Presidency?

It's 10pm in the lifespan of the GOP's hope to take the White House in 2017, and the party leaders have finally realized that they are holding their convention on the Titanic.
The party leaders refused to consider Ted Cruz as a viable candidate (that would have been a sane assumption if they were a different party) so they didn't bother attempting to groom a candidate acceptable to the main stream American voters. And while they were distracted by the bomb thrower, they gave even less thought to Donald Trump. In the beginning of course they assumed that none of the voters would take him seriously. Once he began moving up in the polls, their only hair-brained idea was to challenge his to 'sign a pledge' not to run a third party campaign if he lost the nomination. Once he finally signed it, they didn't believe him, but figured that he would just slither away. Suddenly at the 10th hour they have realized that Trump is running over the party and they are on their knees to support the mad bomber. The 11th hour is just around the corner and the GOP leaders are in multiple 'secret' meeting trying to figure out how they missed this. It seems pretty certain that Trump has beat them masterfully at THEIR game, so now it is the party leaders looking to support a third party if they can't steal the nomination from him. If they do manage to steal it, Trump will surely run as a third party.
How ironic, that after 8 years of attacking Hillary, the GOP leadership is engineering Hillary's election.

For years the republican party has kept the hidden survivalist and racist tendencies of their voting base alive and enflamed using mouth-pieces such as Rush Limbaugh and the NRA. Gleefully keeping silent while the extreme right twisted the words and intent of the constitution while hiding behind the bible.

They've built an ideal political environment for an egotistical bully of a rooster like Trump. So far he's ruling the republican roost and they're getting nervous because they know they can't control him.

I think he's right. The rooster's fans are not going to give him up too easily by nominating someone else at the convention. And you know he wouldn't meekly take any vote stealing shenanigans like Al Gore did. The crap would hit the fan.

The next few months until November will be interesting.

I truly hope you're right, Retired, about assuring a Democratic win. However, it's not reassuring to see how Donald Drumpf has exposed all the racism, bigotry, and ignorance that is lurking out here in the hinterlands. Those factors, along with the suppression of voting rights that has taken place all over the country in states controlled by Republinuts, tends to give one pause. Throw in the basic flaws built into the antiquated Electoral College, whereby one candidate can win the popular vote but lose the election, and it all makes for a very scary year.
